“Su Voto, Es Su Voz,” but SVREP seems MIA in San Antonio’s race for Mayor. Never mind we are the organization’s birth place.
The South Voters Registration Project whose mission is to encourage Latinos to register to vote, has its administrative office in San Antonio, and boasts of major sponsors, seems all over elections in California, even running in the past PSA’s on TV for LA’s run for Mayor, but it seems today is nowhere to be found in it’s own back yard… San Antonio, Texas.
“Southwest Voter Registration Education Project (SVREP) is a non-profit, non-partisan Latino civic education organization. Founded in San Antonio, Texas, in 1974 by William C. Velásquez – champion of the Mexican American voting rights movement, SVREP has been serving communities in the Southwest for more than 20 years” www.svrep.org
While the “Calendar” seems current, for the most part, if a voter visits the SVREP website today, it looks like it has not been many updates in years. In a new Digital era where today’s candidates live and die by someone’s click -take Obama’s election to the White House- their “pressroom” postings on the SVREP.org website are three years old and dated back to 2006. An thier latest “Latino Vote” (you would think a very importan page) still is under construction… Que paso??
SA4Mayor.com contacted and spoke to a representative at SVREP headquarters in San Antonio who promised to get back to us, but as of this article deadline -which SVREP was advised of- no response from San Antonio based VP Lydia Camarillo as to why there is no emphasis in what is going on in their own “elections back yard,” and why the non-profit seems to be MIA.
In the meantime, enjoy the video PSA posted here… too bad it’s not for SVREP’s birthplace SA, but for LA. Nothing wrong with that “pero… y la raza?” good old San Anton? And where is the money SVREP non-profit has been collecting for years… LA?
Our voters wonder, ask, and want to know!
